The Taste is back on Ravinia Avenue this year, the Weber Grill kettle is already firing at the north end of the Triangle, and the bulldozers for Heroes Park are staged for a late-summer start. If you live here, this is the summer to pay attention. Next July, the walk from the Metra platform to the Village Green will look different.
That is the frame worth carrying through the season. Orland Park is not "getting a downtown" in some abstract 2027 sense. It is rebuilding one in phases while residents keep using the old footprint for concerts, farmers markets, and Friday-night dinners. The programming has not paused for the construction, and that gap between old rhythm and new geometry is where this summer sits.
What actually changed on the map since last summer
The Downtown Orland Park build-out is a real project with real dates now, not a rendering. A few anchors have moved from press release to concrete:
- Weber Grill Restaurant opened in spring 2026 as the first tenant of the new 140,000-square-foot Downtown Orland Park development, an 8,500-square-foot venue with indoor and outdoor seating and a cooking school attached. It is the chain's fifth location, joining Chicago, Schaumburg, Lombard, and Indianapolis.
- A milestone agreement announced June 16, 2026 locked in a University of Chicago Medical Center ground lease for a new multi-story musculoskeletal center of roughly 80,000 to 120,000 square feet at the northwest corner of 143rd and LaGrange Road, along with a restated redevelopment agreement with Edwards Realty.
- Heroes Park, the renaming and expansion of the former Crescent Park, is targeted to break ground in late summer 2026 with completion planned for summer 2027. It will serve as the central hub of the district, with a pedestrian walkway, seasonal events, and winter ice skating.
- Parking access is spelled out in the new agreement: the roughly 547-stall garage stays open to the public on evenings, weekends, and holidays, and the adjacent 207-stall surface lot is available outside UCMC's peak daytime hours.
The "Main Street Triangle" name is quietly being retired in favor of Downtown Orland Park. Full build-out is projected for fall 2027, phased in from here.
If you have been in town for more than a few years, the block-by-block story matters. The whole district sits between LaGrange Road and the 143rd Street Metra station, adjacent to Ninety7Fifty on the Park and the existing UCMC Center for Advanced Care that opened in 2015. What was framed a decade ago as a walkable mixed-use vision is now operating with one restaurant open, a park about to be dug up, and a hospital tower on a 24-month construction trigger.
The Taste, and why the venue swap matters
Taste of Orland Park runs Friday, July 31 through Sunday, August 2, 2026 at the Village Green, 14700 S. Ravinia Avenue. Gates are 5 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday.
The venue detail is not a footnote. In 2024, the Village moved the Taste out to Centennial Park West to test the new permanent stage and larger footprint. In 2025, it moved back to the Village Green and drew about 35,000 attendees across the weekend, which Mayor Jim Dodge described as bringing back the "block party feel." The 2026 return to Ravinia confirms that read. If you live within walking distance of Ravinia between 147th and 149th, expect the street closure again.
The restaurant lineup has stayed close to the local core: Barraco's, Buona Beef, Cooper's Hawk Winery & Restaurant, Crave Cookies, Irish Patriot, Jamba Juice, Joey's Red Hots, Mo's Chinese Kitchen, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Orland Ale House, Papa Joe's, Pueblito, Taqueria Los Comales, The Original Rainbow Cone, and Tradycja Polish Fusion Cuisine. Rules to know before you pack a bag: one sealed water bottle per person, no other outside food or drink, no tents or umbrellas beyond a single handheld rain umbrella, bring your own lawn chair or blanket. Bags are inspected at entry.
A weeknight-to-weekend read on the corridor
The instinct with a summer festival is to plan around the headliners. That is fine if you drive in from Tinley or Mokena for one night. If you live here, the more useful move is to treat the Taste weekend as one anchor in a season that also includes a working downtown build. Here is how to work it deliberately:
- Walk the new Weber Grill block before the Taste weekend, not during. The restaurant's outdoor seating is your best pre-construction read on how the finished streetscape wants to feel. Once Heroes Park breaks ground in late summer, that view changes.
- Park on the north side of 143rd if you are attending the Taste on Saturday. The Ravinia garage and the Village lots at Orland Township, the Library at 14921 S. Ravinia, John Humphrey Complex at 14825 West Avenue, and the Rec North Lot at 14600 S. Ravinia are the official options. The 143rd Street garage sits on the Downtown Orland Park side of the tracks, which will still be publicly accessible in the evenings under the new UCMC lease terms.
- Take Metra in if you can. The 143rd Street station is a five-minute walk to the festival footprint and a shorter walk to Weber Grill. This is the summer to build that habit, because the parking picture shifts once the surface lot and garage begin sharing daytime peak with a hospital tenant.
- Save Sunday afternoon for the neighborhood side of the event. Sunday's 3 to 9 p.m. window is the quieter shift, and it closes with fireworks. The Community Stage tends to run local acts, including Orland Park's Got Talent, which usually pulls friends and neighbors you actually know.
None of this is fussy. It is the difference between showing up and working the calendar.
What to watch after Labor Day
The construction calendar is the story for the back half of the year. Heroes Park is scheduled to begin work in late summer 2026, with a summer 2027 completion. If the Village exercises its feasibility window on Parcel C, a performing arts center becomes the next public anchor conversation, with a 36-month construction commencement window written into the agreement. The UCMC musculoskeletal building carries a 24-month structural steel trigger, meaning if ground steel is not up by mid-2028, the development rights revert to Edwards Realty.
For a resident, that means two useful things:
The next twelve months are the widest gap you will see between the old Village Green summer program and the finished Downtown Orland Park district. The programming will keep going. The footprint underneath it will move.
Translation: if there is a corner of the corridor you have not walked in a while, walk it this year. The bakery block memories from the old Randy's Market era are already gone. The next set of "used to be" landmarks is being poured now.
The 22nd year of the Taste last summer set the tone: same restaurants, familiar tribute band circuit, drone show Friday, fireworks Sunday. That formula is stable.
